On August 18th, 2010, Facebook took one giant leap for social networking, introducing Places. What is Places? This video produced by Facebook should help to answer that.
According to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, Places serves three purposes: “Help you share where you are. Help you see who’s around you. And see what’s going on nearby.”
This idea is nothing new. In fact, CCMarketing Blog already has a post discussing one of the applications, Foursquare, already using this social networking idea. The blog can be viewed here, You Could Be Mayor of Ann Taylor!
Representatives from Foursquare, Yelp, Booyah, and Gowalla were at Facebook Places’ launch and have each expressed interest in integrating Places with their programs.
Time to put on your Marketing thinking caps. How can marketers use this application to improve business?

It seems cool. But, also at the same time, just one more thing to keep track of, so a little overwhelming. I am sure I will eventually do it, but it doesn’t seem a priority. Keep up the good work. Could you come over and help me set up a blog for Woody Woodduck? I want to give folks a teaser in the Woody Facebook, then lead them to more info in the Blog site. I’d appreciate your help.

Nice picking up on this Cody. This has been big news the last few days. Naturally, I’m spooked by anything that enables “big brother” behavior, but if people are going to use it, then it makes sense for us to consider the kinds of interactions that are occurring and how those might facilitate a powerful brand presence within the application.
Then again, maybe we don’t really want to market – maybe we just want to eat a hamburger at Old Chicago and let everyone know how juicy it is.

Just me again,
Here’s an article a friend forwarded to me about some new social media tools being released that focus on the more sedentary segment of our population. Why check into Caribou when you can check into Survivor, Mythbuster’s, or Wipe Out?

This just in! Apparently Facebook is coming under some social media fire relating to privacy issues inherent in Facebook Places!
